Reggie Crawford Debuts! - by Roger Munter
As predicted in Monday’s weekend wrap, Reggie Crawford was added to the Richmond roster yesterday — and the Giants wasted no time getting him into his first action of the year. The big left-hander earned his way to the Eastern League by reportedly throwing some extreme lights out ball in extended camp — I heard the fastball had been sitting in the 96-100 range in short outings, and the slider was busy buckling knees.
It remains to be seen how much the Giants stretch Crawford out in this, his second year back from TJ, and how many innings they plan to put on his extraordinarily broad shoulders (I’m still captivated by the idea of seeing Crawford powering his way through swimming pools with his bold, strong strokes). For this day, anyway, the answer to both of those questions was: one inning.
But it was one inning that demanded close attention!
HITTER of the NIGHT: Casey Schmitt (Sac), 2 for 4, HR (4), 3 RBI
PITCHER of the NIGHT: Reggie Crawford (Rich) 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
In truth, it was Sacramento’s Carson Seymour who delivered the night’s dominant performance from the mound — but what can I say? Sometimes being a ginormous 6’5” 1st rounder with a left-arm gifted by Zeus gets its privileges. Twitter was all atwitter and so was There R Giants!
